Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism (DVT/PE) remains one of society’s most pressing healthcare problems, being the third most common cause for cardiovascular related mortality. Both vena cava filter placement and thrombolysis/thrombectomy for DVT have become widely used throughout Europe, but for a long time evidence lagged behind. This changed dramatically with the release of the results from the ATTRACT and CaVenT trials which confirm the current practice of treating patients with iliofemoral DVT by using PMT techniques. IRs therefore must be familiar with pharmaco-mechanical devices they can use for DVT and PE thrombectomy.

In this ESIR course “DVT/PE Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy – Practical Clinical Training Including the Safe Use of Current Medical Devices” organized by Prof Mick Lee, attendees will learn about the evidence behind pharmaco-mechanical DVT and PE treatments, the current status of PE/DVT treatments as well as patient selection. After a review of the current evidence and theoretic background, several cases will be demonstrated in video presentations, followed by an expert panel discussion. Later, participants will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the various devices available on the market and learn how to set up their own practice.
